With new and more stringent standards addressing emission reduction and fuel economy, the importance of a well-developed engine thermal management system becomes even greater. With about 30% of the fuel intake energy dissipated through the cooling system and another 30% through the exhaust system, it is to be expected that serious research has been dedicated to this field. Thermal Management in Automotive Applications, edited by Dr. T. Yomi Obidi, brings together a focused collection of SAE technical papers on the subject. It offers insights into how thermal management impacts the efficiency of engines in heavy vehicles, the effects of better coolant flow control, and the use of smart thermostat and next-generation cooling pumps. It also provides an in-depth analysis of the possible gains in optimum warm-up sequence and thermal management on a small gasoline engine.

As a gearhead, you have a secret advantage when it comes to understanding physics: you see it at work every time you solve a problem with your car or watch a motorsports event. The experience you already have tuning cars or motorcycles is your virtual physics lab. Physics for Gearheads will show you that if you can learn about cars, you can learn about physics. Whether your interest is in increasing your engine's horsepower, getting more miles per gallon, or shaving tenths off your lap time on track day, you can use physics to gain insight into the problem and formulate a solution. Physics for Gearheads not only explains physics principles in language you can understand, it demonstrates how to use physics to your advantage. Note on the units of measurement used in Physics for Gearheads: This book outfits the reader to work in SI or British Engineering units.

Hyundai and Kia are still heavily reliant on a series of core suppliers operating within the Hyundai Motor Group (HMG). As the OEMs have extended their respective global manufacturing footprints, they have displayed an overwhelming preference for using these suppliers as they too have expanded their respective manufacturing networks. To maintain the market momentum seen over the past five years, the OEMs have noted that it will be critical to improve vehicle quality and increase fuel economy by developing technologies within these areas. Suppliers within HMG have some expertise with technology development, but despite recent investment across the global R&D network, Hyundai and Kia do not have the capacity to deliver each and every ground-breaking function and feature. Supplying Hyundai Kia 2015 reviews all areas of activity across the two OEMs, including best-selling models, platform usage, related production strategies, quality, supply chain, and areas of technology development.

Composites are now extensively used in applications where outstanding mechanical properties are necessary in combination with weight savings, due to their highly tunable microstructure and mechanical properties. These properties present great potential for part integration, which results in lower manufacturing costs and faster time to market. Composites also have a high level of styling flexibility in terms of deep drawn panel, which goes beyond what can be achieved with metal stampings. The so-called multifunctional or smart composites provide significant benefits to the vehicles as compared to the traditional materials that only have monotonic properties.

The electric vehicle industry - land, water and air - is rapidly rising to become a market of over $533 billion by 2025. Some run entirely on harvested energy as with solar lake boats. Others recycle energy as with regenerative braking of cars, buses and military vehicles harvesting kinetic energy. Others use different forms of harvesting either to charge the traction batteries, or to drive autonomous device. In some cases, harvesting is making completely new forms of electric vehicle possible such as "glider" Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) that can stay at sea for years, gaining electricity from both wave power and sunshine. Multiple forms of energy harvesting on one vehicle are becoming more common from cars to superyachts.

The Automotive Seating Systems Report from IHS SupplierBusiness takes an in-depth look at the global seating market including the key changes currently underway in the industry and what the future holds for this sector. The report considers in-house seat manufacture and supply chain developments along with advances in safety, comfort and convenience. Fitment rates for various seat features such as powered and memory functions, lumbar support and massage have been increasing and will continue to do so as vehicle interiors become “smarter”. Much of the technology in today’s seats is electric or electronically driven, and can be remotely controlled via links on the dashboard or controllers located throughout the vehicle. The market is opening up to New Tier 1 suppliers as well as Tier 2 and specialist niche technology players, all of whom will intensify the competition for supplying the world’s leading seating companies.

This book covers one and a quarter century of the automobile, conceived as a cultural history of its technology, aimed at engineering students and all those who wish to have a concise introduction into the basics of automotive technology and its long-term development . Its approach is systemic and includes the behavior of drivers, producers, nonusers, victims, and other "stakeholders" as well as the discourse around mobility. Nowadays, students of innovation prefer the term co-evolution, emphasizing the parallel and mutually dependent development of technology and society. This acknowledges the importance of contingency and of the impact of the past upon the present, the very reason why The Evolution of Automotive Technology: A Handbook looks at car technology from a long-term perspective. Often we will conclude that the innovation was in the (re)arrangement of existing technologies. Since its beginnings, car manufacturers have brought a total of 1 billion automobiles to the market.
