An Introduction to Engine Testing and Development

This book presents the basic principles required for the testing and development of internal combustion engine powertrain systems, providing the new automotive engineer with the basic tools required to effectively carry out meaningful tests.

With useful information for graduate students, new test technicians, and established engineers, this book explains the test process - from setting up a dynamometer test facility to testing for performance and durability. Combustion analysis and emissions, and new test trends are also covered.

Richard D. Atkins

Throughout his career, Richard D. Atkins has worked with the internal combustion engine. He was closely involved in the development of Formula 1 race engines through the 1 960s, and he was the development manager with Tecalemit, covering the design and development of early electronic fuel injection systems used in race and rally cars. Mr. Atkins was responsible for the build and running of cars in both the London-to-Sydney and the London Mexico World Cup International rallies. Mr. Atkins formed his own company to manufacture electronic fuel injection systems for race cars and motorcycles. He has worked in that capacity as a consultant and for major automotive companies in France, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Poland, Slovakia, India, and Iran. Mr. Atkins has been an active member of SAE International since 1988. He also is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, where he holds the post of Chairman of the Automobile Division Southern Centre. While continuing his consultancy business, Mr. Atkins currently is a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at Sussex University and a Visiting Fellow at Kingston Universities in the United Kingdom, where his extensive knowledge of the internal combustion engine is greatly valued.
