Practical Diesel-Engine Combustion Analysis

This book examines some basic characteristics of diesel engine combustion process, and describes the commonly used tool to analyze combustion - heat release analysis. In addition, it describes the performance changes that might be encountered in the engine user environment, with a goal of helping the reader analyze his own practical combustion problems.

Bertrand Hsu

Bertrand Dahong Hsu completed both his undergraduate and graduate education at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. From 1953 to 1978, he was on the faculty of Tsinghua University as a Professor of Automobile Engineering. In 1979 Hsu left China and joined the General Electric Company Transportation Systems division (GETS) in Erie, Pennsylvania, as a diesel engine project engineer in combustion. He became principal investigator and later program manager for the multiyear GE-DOE Coal-Fueled Diesel Program at GETS. In 1993 he became manager of Advanced Projects Engineering in the GETS Diesel Engine Engineering Department, responsible for low-emission diesel engine and alternative-fuel engine development. Hsu retired from full-time employment in mid-1998. He continues to consult for GETS on diesel-engine combustion issues. Since his arrival in the United States, Bertrand Hsu has published more than 30 technical papers on internal-combustion engines in Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Conseil International des Machines a Combustion (CIMAC), Institution of Mechanical Engineers (Inst. Mech. E.), and other professional conferences. In 1984, he won Outstanding Technical Contribution awards from both GETS and GE Company Power System Sector. He received the ASME Internal Combustion Engine division (ICE) Speaker award in 1998. ASME also presented him with the ICE Division Citation award in 1995 for his contributions to technology in the fields of alternate fuel combustion in internal-combustion engines. He holds 10 U.S. patents and has others pending with GETS. Hsu has been a member of SAE for 20 years.
