Chassis Design

Principles and Analysis

Chassis Design: Principles and Analysis is based on Olley's technical writings, and is the first complete presentation of his life and work. This new book provides insight into the development of chassis technology and its practical application by a master. Many examples are worked out in the text and the analytical developments are grounded by Olley's years of design experience.

Well-illustrated with over 400 figures and tables, as well as numerous appendices.

William F. Milliken

Bill Milliken studied mechanical engineering at the University of Maine, and received a B. S in mathematics/aeronautical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1934. He also took private pilot training at the Boeing School of Aeronautics. He was successively employed at MIT, Chance Vought, Vought-Silcorsky, Boeing Aircraft, Avion/Northrup, Curtiss-Wright, and CAL/Calspan- 20 years in aircraft stability and control/flight tests, including pioneering work in stability augmentation and variable stability. Since then he has been involved with automotive stability and control, first at CAL/Calspan and then at Milliken Research Associates, Inc. (MRA), the company he founded in 1976 to continue this work. He designed, built and crashed his own airplane and has competed in more than 100 post-war road races and hill climbs.

Douglas L. Milliken

Doug Milliken grew up in the heady atmosphere of basic vehicle stability and control research at CAL/ Caispan, first in the flight hangar and later with ground vehicle activity. During the same period he attended numerous motor races including time in the pits and garage with the Formula One teams at Watkins Glen and work with a Trans-Am race team (2.5 liter). He received a B. S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1977 and joined Milliken Research Associates (MRA) shortly thereafter. Projects at MRA include mechanical design and fabrication of prototypes and instrumentation; and test and development work including planning, design, driving and data analysis. He has experience with a wide range of vehicles including bicycles, record-breaking streamlined human powered vehicles, motorcycles, production and race cars, active control cars, automotive simulators and trucks of various sizes. He currently manages the vehicle dynamics and analysis activity at MRA.
