Dr. Fuquan (Frank) Zhao is a Research Executive of Technical Affairs at DaimlerChrysler Corporation. In this position, he is engaged in many facets of corporate powertrain research and development activities, including combustion system development, emissions reduction, fuel economy improvements, engine system control, engine design, energy management systems, alternative propulsion systems, fuel effects, and strategic planning for future products and technologies. Dr. Zhao received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Jilin University of Technology (China) in 1985. He obtained his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hiroshima (Japan) in 1989 and his Ph.D. there in 1992. His previous experience includes Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Wayne State University, Research Fellow at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (UK), and Postdoctoral Fellow at Wayne State University and the University of Hiroshima. He received several awards both internally and externally. He is currently the chair of the combustion committee for the SAE Fuels & Lubricants Activity. Dr. Zhao is the principal author of more than 100 technical publications on various subjects related to engine combustion and emissions control technologies. He is the principal author of the book “Automotive Gasoline Direct-Injection Engines" published by SAE in 2002, and the leading editor of the book "Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) Engines" published by SAE in 2003.
