Dr. Juan R. Pimentel is a Professor of Computer Engineering at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Kettering University, in Flint, Michigan (formerly General Motors Institute). He has over 25 years of academic, research, and industrial experience covering industrial computer networks, mobile robots, safety-critical automotive systems, system verification and validation, embedded software, and distributed embedded systems. He participated in the MAP (Manufacturing Automation Protocol) project of General Motors in the late 1980s, co-developed the application layer of Profibus FMS (a successful fieldbus network from Siemens), and developed FIexCAN, a CAN-based protocol and architecture for safety-oriented systems. He has been recognized as an international expert in the area of industrial communication systems and automotive safety-oriented systems. He has performed research at the Fraunhofer Institute in Karlsruhe, Germany, the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid and the Universidad Carlos Ill de Madrid, Spain, the Universidad de los Andes, Bogota, Colombia, the University of Padova, Italy, and INRIA (National Institute of Research on Computer Science and Automation), Nancy, France. Prof. Pimentel is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and Industrial Informatics and past Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. He is the author of two books on computer networks and multimedia systems, and a regular contributor to several handbooks. He is a member of IEEE, SAE, Tau Beta Pi, Etta Kappa Nu, and Sigma Xi.
